Meaning

connexon; hemichannel of a gap junction

A membrane channel in vertebrate cells made of six connexin proteins (a hexamer). Two connexons from neighboring cells join end-to-end to form a gap junction channel that lets ions and small molecules pass between cells. A single, undocked connexon is called a hemichannel. In invertebrates, similar channels are built from innexins.
