In Buddhism, deep-rooted mental defilements, called āsava, that stain the mind and keep people in suffering. There are four: sensual desire (kāmāsava), desire for existence (bhavāsava), wrong views (diṭṭhāsava), and ignorance (avijjāsava).

As long as one cannot eliminate the defilement of ignorance (avijjāsava), which is the root of all āsavas, beings must continue to wander through the cycle of rebirth (samsara).
