- 555 is laughter: five is ห้า (hâa), so 555 reads "ha ha ha".
- Lots of Thai slang is an everyday word with a new meaning: ปังbpang (bang) means amazing, นกnók (bird) means you missed out, and เผือกpʉ̀ʉak (taro) means nosy.
- Much of it comes from fan culture, gaming and LGBTQ+ slang, and spreads through TikTok, X and memes.
- Words like ปัง, ฟิน and เท have lasted for years; this year's hits may be gone by next year.
- Use slang with friends, not with your boss, your landlord or anyone older.
The short answer
Thai internet slang is the language of comments, group chats and captions. A lot of it takes an ordinary word and gives it a new meaning: "bang" means amazing, "bird" means you got nowhere, "curry" means a prank. Some words come from English (นอยด์ from "paranoid", เฟล from "fail"), and many started in fan communities and Thai LGBTQ+ slang before everyone picked them up.
This guide covers the words that have lasted and that you'll still see everywhere in 2026, plus the newest ones and how long they're likely to stick around. Almost every word has a real recording from the ThaiFlip dictionary, and you can practise reading them in a real-style chat below.
How Thais type online
The most famous Thai internet word is a number. Five is ห้า (hâa), so 555 reads "ha ha ha". The more fives, the bigger the laugh: 55 is a chuckle, 55555 is proper laughter. It doesn't always mean something is funny, either; a 555 at the end of a message often just makes it sound friendlier.
| You'll see | What it means |
|---|---|
| 55555555 | Laughter. More fives, bigger laugh. You'll also see 555+. |
| 56565 💀 | A newer Gen Z laugh: a jumble of 5s and 6s, often with a skull emoji, for "I'm dead". Some younger Thais feel a neat 5555 sounds forced. |
| ค่าาาครับบบkâa, kráp | Repeating the last letter stretches the word, which makes it warmer, cuter or more emphatic. |
| งับคับค่าngáp, káp, kâa | Soft, cute spellings of the polite particles ครับ and ค่ะ, popular in messages. |
| ใช่ๆchâi châi | The sign ๆ repeats the word before it: "yes, yes". |
| จขกท.jâo kŏng grà-tóo | Short for เจ้าของกระทู้, "thread owner": the original poster on Pantip and other forums. |
| ปล.bpor lor | ป.ล., the Thai "P.S.", at the end of a post or message. |
The cute spellings are covered in our guide to Thai particles: a Chulalongkorn University linguist describes them as a way to make an ending sound softer and less abrupt, and they're used by everyone, not one group. Thais also laugh, giggle and fake-cry in Thai letters:

Praise and hype
Thai has lots of words for "amazing". You'll see them under photos, outfits, concerts and food.
- ปัง is the all-rounder: a concert, a product launch or a selfie can be ปังมาก. It has been around for years and isn't going anywhere.
- เริ่ด and calling someone แม่, "mother", come from Thai LGBTQ+ and kathoey slang: แม่ is a compliment that means an icon. ตัวแม่ and ตัวมัม play on the same idea, and ตัวมารดา, with the formal word for mother, is a jokey step up.
- ตึง means "tight". As slang, ตึง or อย่างตึง is praise for something seriously solid. ตัวตึง is the star of a team or a scene, and gamers praise a great player as ตึงสุดในรุ่น, "the tightest of their year". Some people also say they feel ตึงๆ after a few drinks, though กรึ่มๆ is the usual word for tipsy.
- ฉ่ำ normally means juicy. As slang it means "loads": งานฉ่ำ is a pile of work. Thai social listening firm Wisesight named it the top slang word of 2023, and it's still around.
- แซ่บ, the Isan word for spicy and delicious, also means hot or sexy. งานดี, "good work", is a cheeky way to say someone's good-looking. Both are about looks and bodies, so use them about celebrities or between close friends, not to someone you've just met.
Feelings
- ฟิน is bliss: a great ending, a hot bath, your idol looking your way. It has been common for years.
- นอยด์, from "paranoid", is overthinking: reading too much into a short reply or a late one.
- ว้าวุ่น is an ordinary word for restless or troubled. A viral 2023 line, เราก็เท่ซะด้วย ทีนี้ก็ว้าวุ่นเลย, made it one of that year's top phrases on Thai social media.
- ลำไย is a longan, the fruit. As slang, calling someone ลำไย means they're getting on your nerves. Say it to friends only.
- ตุย is a casual word for "to die", used like "I'm dead" in English, for something too funny, too cute or too much.
Fans, gossip and drama
Thai fandoms, for K-pop, Thai BL series and everything else, invented a lot of today's slang, and gossip pages spread it further.
- เผือก is taro, the root vegetable. As slang it means nosy: it rhymes with เสือก, a much ruder word for sticking your nose in. It's usually playful: ขอเผือกหน่อย, "let me be nosy for a second".
- ติ่ง, literally a little nub, is a superfan. It started as a mildly mocking word for K-pop fans and is now worn with pride.
- จิ้น is "to ship", to imagine two people as a couple, and a คู่จิ้น is a shipped pair, a big part of Thai drama and BL fandom. Fans also borrow the English: ชิป and ชิปเปอร์.
- ทัวร์ลง, "the tour bus arrives", is an online pile-on: crowds of strangers flooding someone's comments, like a busload of tourists turning up at the door.
- ขิง, ginger, is showing off, and แซะ is throwing shade. เกรียน is a troll, or a bratty kid. It's mildly insulting, so keep it for friends who'll take it as a joke.
Love, luck and getting caught out
- นก (bird) is when you get nowhere: your crush doesn't reply, or the tickets sell out first. เท (pour) is being ditched or stood up. Both are everyday slang.
- แกง (curry) is to prank or fool someone, and โดนแกง is "I got played". A big prank is แกงหม้อใหญ่, "a big pot of curry".
- โป๊ะ is "busted": the moment a story falls apart, like a "single" celebrity with a couple's photo in their story. โป๊ะแตก is the full version.
- ทิพย์ means divine, but as slang it means imaginary: a แฟนทิพย์ is a pretend partner, a ทริปทิพย์ a trip you only dreamed about.
- มูเตลู, or just มู, covers amulets, fortune-telling, lucky phone numbers and praying at shrines for love, money or exam results. Someone into it is สายมู. The word is usually traced to the chant in a 1979 Indonesian horror film, and it's now a whole industry, with "mutelu marketing" aimed at believers.
Social media verbs
Thai borrows freely from English online and then makes the words its own, often shortening them. You'll need these to talk about your phone at all.
ทัก, "to greet", is how you message someone: ทักมาได้เลย, "just message me". Add ไลน์ for a message on LINE, the app most Thais use for chatting.
New in 2025 and 2026
These are the words Thai slang roundups were explaining in 2025 and 2026. Some will last; most won't. Recognise them, but don't build your Thai on them.
| Word | What it means |
|---|---|
| ชีเสิร์ฟchii sə̀əp | From English "she serves": a flawless look or performance. It took off at the start of 2025. |
| ทำถึงtam-tʉ̌ng | "Went all the way": went all out and delivered. Almost always sincere praise. |
| อ่อมɔ̀ɔm | Lame, flat, a letdown. Also the name of an Isan herb curry. |
| 2/10sŏng dtem sìp | A fake low rating for a place that's actually great, so it doesn't get crowded. |
| เหยินhěe yin | Grinning so hard you can't hide it, usually over a crush or an idol. |
| ติดแกลมdtìt gɛɛ lom | Hooked on glamour: a taste for luxury, often beyond your bank balance. |
| คนไทยคนแรกkon-tai kon rɛ̂ɛk | "The first Thai person": teasing someone who gets excited about something ordinary as if they were the first Thai person ever to try it. |
| ช็อตฟีลchɔ́t-fiin | Killing the mood. From around 2022, but still everywhere. |
| ใจฟูjai-fuu | "Fluffy heart": warm and happy. |
When not to use slang
- Keep it to friends and social media. Slang in a work email, with your landlord or with anyone older sounds disrespectful or just odd. Use full, polite Thai with ครับ or ค่ะ there.
- Some words are insults. เกรียน, ลำไย and กาก (rubbish) are aimed at people. Fine as a joke between close friends; hurtful anywhere else.
- Watch out for double meanings. Some animal words double as swear words. เหี้ย, the monitor lizard, is one of the strongest Thai swear words, roughly the f-word, so strong that Thais often call the lizard itself ตัวเงินตัวทอง ("Mr Silver-Gold") instead. ควาย, buffalo, is fine for the animal but means "idiot" when aimed at a person. Don't copy them from films or comments.
- Crude pronouns are a separate thing. กู and มึง are everywhere in comments and between close friends, but from a learner they usually sound aggressive. Our guide to Thai pronouns explains when they're used.
- Respect where the words come from. Many of the most popular words, like เริ่ด, ตัวแม่ and แม่ as a compliment, came from Thai LGBTQ+ and kathoey communities. Using them warmly is fine; using them to mock is not.
How to keep up
Slang lives in comments, captions and group chats, so read them. Thai TikTok, X, YouTube comments and Facebook pages are where new words show up first, and Thai friends are usually happy to explain the latest one. Thai news sites publish slang explainers every year, often around Thai Language Day on 29 July.
Our YouTube channels guide lists Thai comedy, vlog and podcast channels where you'll hear slang in use, and the ThaiFlip Chrome extension lets you look up any Thai word in YouTube captions as you watch, including many of the slang words above.

Should foreigners use Thai slang?
With friends, a well-placed ปัง or 555 goes down well and shows you're tuned in. Avoid slang with older people, at work and in anything formal, and be careful with words that insult or tease, like เกรียน and ลำไย. Understanding slang is more useful than using it.
How do I keep up with new Thai slang?
