Learn Thai with YouTube: 19 channels by level

Thai YouTube is one of the best free ways to learn the language. Here are 19 channels, from lessons for complete beginners to comedy and business podcasts, sorted by level and checked for Thai captions.

Key takeaways
  • Start with channels made for learners, then move to videos made for Thais as soon as you can follow most of what you hear.
  • Cooking and travel videos are the easiest real Thai, because you can see what people are talking about.
  • Most channels only have auto-generated Thai captions, which make mistakes. Pigkaploy and a few others have human-made ones.
  • Comedy, talk shows and business podcasts are for upper intermediate and advanced learners.

The short answer

YouTube gives you what textbooks can't: thousands of hours of real Thai, spoken by real people about things they care about. The trick is choosing videos at the right level. Too easy and you learn little; too hard and it's just noise.

The 19 channels below are the same ones in the channel guide of ThaiFlip's Chrome extension. We sorted them by level, checked their captions and picked a video to start with for most of them. It works best alongside the rest of a study plan, which our guide to learning Thai covers.

How to learn from Thai YouTube

  1. Watch at your level. Choose videos where you understand most of what's said. That's the idea behind comprehensible input, the approach Comprehensible Thai is built on.
  2. Turn on Thai subtitles if you can read Thai. You hear each word and see how it's spelled at the same time, including the tone marks.
  3. Watch the same video more than once. The second time, you're listening to the language instead of working out the story.
  4. Slow it down. YouTube's playback speed setting makes fast speech easier to catch, and the five tones easier to hear.
  5. Save a few words, not all of them. Pick the ones you hear again and again, and review them later.
  6. Say a few lines out loud. Copying a speaker's rhythm and tones is good practice for your own speaking.

Thai captions: human or auto-generated?

YouTube videos can have two kinds of Thai captions: ones the creator made and uploaded, and ones YouTube generates automatically from the audio. In the subtitle menu, the automatic ones are labelled "auto-generated". We checked 76 videos across these channels on 11 October 2026, and most channels only had auto-generated Thai captions.

Auto-generated captions are still useful, but they get names, slang and fast speech wrong, so don't learn spellings from them. Human-made Thai captions were on Pigkaploy's recent videos, and on the start videos we suggest for Thai With Grace, Salmon House and Point of View.

Look words up as you watch

ThaiFlip's free Chrome extension turns a video's Thai captions into words you can tap to see the meaning, hear and save, without leaving the video. It shows the whole transcript with transliteration and English, lets you replay a line with one key, and includes this channel guide in its side panel. It works on videos that have a Thai caption track, human-made or auto-generated.

Turn every video into a lesson.

Words you save while watching go into your ThaiFlip decks, with recordings and example sentences, so you can review them on thaiflip.com or in the ThaiFlip app.

Frequently asked questions

Can you learn Thai from YouTube?

You can learn a lot, especially listening. Channels like Comprehensible Thai teach entirely in Thai from the first lesson, and Thai vlogs, cooking shows and podcasts give you endless real speech. Most learners still need the script, some structured study and speaking practice alongside.

What's the best YouTube channel for beginners?

Comprehensible Thai if you want to learn by listening from zero, Thai With Grace for slow stories with Thai and English subtitles, and BananaThai if you prefer grammar explained in English.

Should I watch with Thai or English subtitles?

Thai, if you can read the script: you hear and see each word at the same time. English subtitles are fine for following a story, but you'll read instead of listening. Note that many Thai caption tracks are auto-generated and contain mistakes.

Which Thai YouTube channels have Thai subtitles?

Most channels only have YouTube's auto-generated Thai captions. In our check, Pigkaploy's recent videos had human-made Thai captions, as did the start videos we suggest for Thai With Grace, Salmon House and Point of View.

Are Thai dramas good for learning Thai?

Yes, once you're around intermediate. Dramas use everyday conversation, repeat a lot of emotional language and keep you watching. GMMTV posts full episodes on YouTube, often with English subtitles.

How much Thai YouTube should I watch?

Little and often beats long sessions you don't follow. Twenty or thirty minutes a day of videos you mostly understand, with some rewatching, is a realistic habit.

Levels, captions, start videos and subscriber counts were checked on YouTube on 11 October 2026. Channels change, so tell us if something's out of date.
